  • Staying Safe During the COVID-19 Pandemic in 2021
covid 19
  • January 15, 2021

As we begin the new year, we are still living in a time when we must maintain a heightened awareness of the current COVID-19 pandemic AND the usual influenza(flu). We must continue to be vigilant in our efforts to protect ourselves, our families, and co-workers from the spread of these two viral diseases. Your efforts as an individual can have a meaningful and lasting impact to reduce the spread of these viruses. Working together with your family to create a plan of action and reminding them to stick to the plan will significantly help getting though this trying time so we can get back to life as we remember and loved it.

There are two main areas to remember to consider with your action plan – health protection and health prevention:

  • Health protection includes those actions that will protect you and others around you from the viruses. Always wear your mask when around other people whether in public, using public transportation, at work, or in gatherings of people – and wear it correctly over the nose and mouth. If a person has either virus – flu or coronavirus – the mask reduces the respiratory droplets and the distance they travel during exhalation. There are people who have the virus and do not know it which is why everyone should be wearing face coverings and reducing personal contact to protect everyone. Wash your hands frequently. Also avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. If you are sick, stay at home and do not travel unless you need to visit your doctor or health center and be sure to share your travel history with them if you do go in for a visit.
  • Health Prevention is the second area to remember. These actions include staying or getting into a routine of positive, healthy lifestyles that can boost your body’s immunity. Drinking water and non-sugary drinks can help the body’s hydration and metabolism and reduce inflammation that tax the body. Eating healthy foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, whole grains, and reducing processed foods and fast foods can help nourish the body, feed the organs, and fuel the activity that you do.Being regularly active daily with moderate physical activity such as walking, stretching, and doing some resistance training can help the body process foods and circulate oxygen and blood through the body. You will see many people out walking or biking in the mornings before they start the day, just be sure to wear your mask when out and maintain safe distances. One of the most important lifestyle behaviors to boost immunity is to get enough sleep, so that your body can recover and heal from the wear and tear of life. The negative behaviors to stop, reduce, or moderate are using alcohol, tobacco, or drugs which can reduce your immunity and make you more susceptible to illness and more vulnerable to viruses. Plan your day and get into a healthy routine.

By practicing health protection and health prevention, you and your family can reduce your risk of contracting the viruses and lead healthier and longer lives. Being mindful of your daily actions, being considerate of others that you are around, and taking positive approaches to live a better and more rewarding life.
